We've had some exciting news over the weekend. Friday started our official Kickstarter campaign for our newest project, "The Heart of Shahrazad". Our goal with this Kickstarter is to raise the money we will need for venues in which to perform - for our performance goal of August 2015.
Some people may wonder - why so long? Isn't a year a long long time? And the answer is actually - no. Some of you may have planned a wedding and gone through the process of booking locations, getting all the right people together, and the many other pieces of what it takes to get a wedding together. Creating a new performance piece is sort of like planning a wedding - it takes a lot of planning and work!
Our initial ideas began the Spring of 2014 and during the Summer of 2014 Sarah spent writing and creating the script. Mid August the composer was given a copy of the script and she is now working to create the original music for the piece. While she works Lara and Sarah are busy working on finding venues to perform and schedule, getting costumes together, and starting to work on what the performance will be like.
Another aspect of this journey is raising the funds to help this project come alive. We are working on several grant possibilities as well as creating a Kickstarter program.
You may ask - why support this project? And that is a great question. We believe in this project. And are striving to make this project about the community. About connecting people in the community from a variety of backgrounds to look at a very serious issue in our time - and that is the issue of violence towards women. A large theme in the piece we are working on takes a look at the unfortunate statistics that 1 in 5 women will experience rape or attempted rape in her lifetime. (International Justice Mission).
The news is filled with stories about domestic abuse, about women being kidnapped from their families in Nigeria, to rape being used as a means to rage war in many areas of the world. This is an issue that impacts all of us - men and women. It happens across economic status, race, and country and hurts communities.
We are not counselors or doctors or those who work on a daily basis to fight against violence. But we think everyone can do something about this issue.
And so we are bringing what we can to fight against this. We are storytellers. And we want to create a space where the shame so many survivors hold can be brought to light. We want to remind people that stories matter. That our journeys to healing have weight and value. That there is no shame in them.
And so we ask that if you can consider joining us in the journey. It is a big undertaking. But we are excited and passionate about telling this story.
Ways you can be a part of this project.
1. Donate to our Kickstarter Campaign - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1349435256/the-heart-of-shahrazad
2. Share our project with friends. We would love this project to reach a wide and diverse audience. So if you know people who would be interested in our project please consider sharing this with them.
So many people have already stepped in and encouraged and supported this project. We want to thank you for helping us create and tell a story that speaks into the violence we see in the world and asks us to step back and consider what we can do.
